Ohio State Football: Ryan Day’s creativity to be challenged
By Ryan Stano
With the Ohio State football team having lost two games last season, there is pressure on them to be much better in 2022. In order to do that, Ryan Day will have to be more creative this season. That is especially true with loss of Jeremy Ruckert and no true answer at tight end yet.
Day will to add some creative wrinkles in the offense to make sure it doesn’t get too predictable. We all know how good the receivers are in this offense and we know how good C.J. Stroud is at getting the ball to those receivers. But even throwing to just receivers gets predictable, no matter how good those receivers are.
TreVeyon Henderson might need to get more involved in the passing game as well. We saw how explosive he was with the ball in his hands when he got it on a swing pass in the opener against Minnesota. More plays like that might be in the cards in 2022.
Day has the reputation as an excellent offensive mastermind. He comes up with ways to get the best playmakers the ball whenever possible. He will need to do that in more creative ways in 2022 with a revamped offensive line and two first-round receivers headed to the NFL.
This isn’t just exclusive to the passing game either. There needs to be more creativity in the run game as well. There were plenty of times where the Buckeyes would just run right up the middle and get stuffed. They didn’t have a lot of different ways of getting Henderson the ball.
I have faith that Day will be able to make the offense even better than it was last season. If he does, the Buckeyes are true contenders for the national title.
