Ohio State Women’s basketball team looking to get to Elite 8
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State Women’s basketball team is still in the NCAA Tournament even if the men aren’t. Quite frankly, they have been the better of the two basketball programs for the last few years. They have been more consistent and Kevin McGuff has brought out a true contender.
Now the Buckeyes have a shot to make the Elite 8 with a win tonight against Texas. The Buckeyes will face the Longhorns tonight at 7 pm on ESPN 2. Ohio State makes this game after beating 3-seed LSU. The Buckeyes are a 6-seed and Texas is a 2-seed.
It will likely come down to Ohio State’s ability to find a third scorer. Taylor Mikesell and Jacy Sheldon have been fantastic all year long leading the Buckeyes in scoring. They are likely going to need to find someone else to help out with the scoring if they want to win this game.
Ohio State hasn’t made the Elite 8 since the 1992-1993 season when they lost in the National Championship Game. McGuff’s squad had a postseason ban last season and is making up for it with this year’s run. This team has enough punch to make the Final Four.
The three-point shooting is what I think will make the difference. Mikesell is tied for the most three-point makes per game in the country with 3.6. Her ability to stretch the floor and open up the paint is the reason why I think Ohio State wins this game.
It would be really cool to see this Ohio State Women’s basketball team be able to make the Elite 8. They are incredibly skilled and fun to watch. If you want to check them out, they will be on ESPN2 at 7 pm. If they win tonight, they would play again on Sunday evening.
