Ohio State Women’s basketball makes Sweet 16 after beating LSU
By Ryan Stano
While the men’s team’s season is officially over, the Ohio State women’s basketball team continues to win. The Buckeyes are a 6-seed in the NCAA Tournament and continue to show that they are a force to be reckoned with. That’s especially true after their win last night.
The Buckeyes beat 3-seed LSU 79-64 to advance to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017. It was a game that wasn’t close at any point in the second half as Ohio State kept their foot on the gas. They were once again led by their two best players Jacy Sheldon and Taylor Mikesell.
Sheldon was the leading scorer for the Buckeyes, putting in 23 points on 9-17 shooting, including 2-5 from three. She also added 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Mikesell had 18 points and 5 rebounds and shot 4-7 from beyond the arc. Both ladies have been key for the Buckeyes all year.
Ohio State shot a scorching 48% from the field and 45% from three. That helped them beat LSU despite turning the ball over 20 times as a team. Good team defense also helped because LSU only shot 36.8% from the field and 25% from three-point land.
Kevin McGuff’s squad will now turn their attention to the Sweet 16. It’s a bit of a quick turnaround for them as they will take on 2-seed Texas on Friday at 7 pm on ESPN2. If the Buckeyes win this game, they will play the winner of 1-seed Stanford and 4-seed Maryland in the Elite Eight.
I wouldn’t put anything past this Ohio State women’s basketball team right now. As long as Sheldon and Mikesell can keep it up, they could make a run to the Final Four. They certainly don’t lack offensive talent.
