Ohio State Women’s Hockey team wins National Championship
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State Women’s Hockey team just won their first-ever national championship after beating Minnesota-Duluth for the title.
While the Ohio State men’s basketball team had a rough day on Sunday, the women’s hockey team had the best day in their history. That’s because they won the first national championship in program history after defeating Minnesota-Duluth 3-2.
It was a close game throughout. The Buckeyes finished off a magical season by scoring 3 goals in the final two periods after the first period went scoreless. Ohio State opened up the scoring after Paetyn Levis scored in the second period, but Minnesota-Duluth quickly evened the score.
24 seconds after the third period started, Clair DeGeorge scored to give the Buckeyes the lead once more. Two minutes after that, Minnesota-Duluth scored again to tie it up. Ohio State scored once more and was able to play good enough defense to secure the national title.
It’s the best end to a women’s hockey season in program history because it’s the first national title that the women’s team has won. The Buckeyes have been on a steady ascent in the last few years. Last year they lost in the Frozen Four before they could make the national title game.
This year, they beat Yale 2-1 before they took on Minnesota-Duluth today for the national championship. Ohio State continues to improve as a hockey program and has now reached the top of the mountain. Ever since head coach Nadine Muzerall took over the program, they have gotten steadily better.
Congrats to these fine women! They definitely deserved the national title.
