Ohio State Football: Three 2023 prospects to watch
By Ryan Stano
The first prospect we’re going to take a look at is Caleb Downs. Downs is a five-star safety from the state of Georgia. He’s being recruited by new safeties coach Perry Eliano and he would be an excellent first recruit to bring into the program for Eliano.
Downs has offers from all of the big boys. Aside from Ohio State, he has offers from Alabama, Clemson, North Carolina, Notre Dame, and a whole host of other schools he isn’t really considering. Those first five schools seem to be who he’s choosing between.
Based on what I’ve seen from him on film, he’s the perfect type of player that Jim Knowles would want on defense. He’s physical, a good tackler, and is a good run stopper. His ball skills are pretty solid, but they can get even better. As a run stopper, this guy is great.
Bringing in Downs after the Ohio State football team would bring in Sonny Styles would be an excellent back-to-back haul for the safety position. Downs is someone who could fight for playing time right away wherever he decides to go.
Downs attended the Buckeyes’ camp last summer but hasn’t made an official visit yet. I’m sure that’s something that Eliano and the rest of Ohio State’s staff are going to try to schedule sometime in the Fall. Getting him on campus is the next biggest thing to do for him right now.
The next prospect on this list is on the offensive side of the ball who could be a real stud.
