Ohio State Women’s Basketball wins the Big Ten
By Ryan Stano
While the men’s team suffered its worst loss of the season yesterday, the Ohio State Women’s basketball team continues to roll. In fact, they rolled all the way to the Big Ten title after beating Michigan State 61-55 to clinch a share of the conference championship.
Currently ranked 17th in the country, the lady Buckeyes are led by two great guards in Jacy Sheldon and Taylor Mikesell. They average 19.4 and 19.1 points per game respectively. Mikesell is a sharpshooter from deep, finishing at 47% from behind the arc this season.
Head coach Kevin McGuff has done a tremendous job with this program. The Ohio State Women’s basketball team is competitive almost every single season, and they always seem to produce some excellent players. This year, they might have their most complete team.
Now that they’ve won the Big Ten regular-season title, the Buckeyes will get the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament. We’ll see what they are able to do from there, but there’s a great chance that these ladies run through the tournament and win that Big Ten title too.
From what I’ve seen in different Bracketologies, the Buckeyes are listed as about a 5 or 6-seed right now. I’m sure a deep run in the conference tournament would help improve that seeding. If they win that title too, I bet they could get all the way up to a 3-seed.
If you haven’t watched the women’s team yet, I highly suggest it. They play really solid basketball and are way better at the fundamentals than the men’s team. They are clearly the better of the two basketball programs right now and deserve all the credit in the world.
Ohio State will play their next game Friday at 11:30 am in Indianapolis in the Big Ten Tournament. They get a double-bye by winning the regular-season title and will play the winner of Purdue and Michigan State. The game will be on Big Ten Network. Check them out!
