The Ohio State basketball team was still fighting for a Big Ten Championship heading into their matchup against Maryland. Those dreams are certainly over after the Buckeyes suffered their worst loss of the season against a bad Maryland team.

The main reason they lost is because of poor shooting and rebounding. The Buckeyes were awful from behind the three-point line. They shot 28.6% from three. The two best players for Ohio State were awful. E.J. Liddell was only 3/10 and Malaki Branham was only 4/13.

Losing to a bad Maryland team 75-60 is an indictment on this team’s ability to do anything once the NCAA Tournament rolls around. If someone can’t step up when Liddell and Branham can’t carry the team, more losses will be coming for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State also allowed 11 offensive rebounds in this game. A lot of them were in back-breaking moments too. It was disappointing to see that Chris Holtmann once again failed to make adjustments on the glass. It’s disappointing to see that he can’t get this team to play better.

Ohio State now just has home games remaining. They might be favored in all of them, but it doesn’t matter. We now finally know what the ceiling of this team is, and it’s not very high. Winning the rest of those games would just give them a double-bye in the Big Ten Tournament before they lose the first time they play.

Next. Will Ohio State use the tight end?. dark

Unless something changes soon, it’s time to start having a conversation about Holtmann’s future as the head coach of this Ohio State basketball program. It’s been five seasons now and they still haven’t won a second round contest in the NCAA Tournament.
