The Ohio State basketball team got the best win of the season last night when they won at Illinois. They did so behind the scoring prowess of Malaki Branham, who poured in 31 points on 10/14 shooting against the Illini. Branham has been on an absolute tear lately.

In the last three games, Branham has scored 22, 27, and 31 points. He’s doing that on just under 70% shooting in those games. While this play has led to some Buckeye wins, it’s also starting to make some Ohio State basketball fans nervous about his future.

They’re nervous because Branham is starting to possibly play his way out of Columbus. I wrote about the possibility of him being a one-and-done, and that was before the huge game against Illinois. His numbers have only improved since then.

NBA scouts are no doubt taking notice. If Branham keeps up this type of play in the NCAA Tournament, he’ll only get more recognition. He might even be able to push his draft stock into the first round. That’s what gets Buckeye fans nervous because he could then leave.

Ohio State fans thought they were going to get Branham for at least two years. That may have turned into wishful thinking after Illinois coach Brad Underwood called Branham “the best player in the Big Ten”. That’s strong praise from an opposing coach.

Branham’s play gives the Buckeyes a chance to still win a Big Ten championship. His offensive skills keep the Buckeyes in almost every game they play, no matter who the opponent is. He might be able to lead them to the deepest point in the postseason in the Chris Holtmann era.

Whether Branham leaves after this year or not remains to be seen. Buckeye fans just have to enjoy him while he’s here.
