Ohio State Football: How Miyan Williams can keep getting snaps
By Ryan Stano
The starting running back for the Ohio State football team is TreVeyon Henderson. That is not up for debate. He was clearly the best running back last year as a true freshman and is the back that has the most big-play ability. That doesn’t mean other running backs on the roster are bad though.
Miyan Williams is an excellent backup option. He showed some spurts of good play last year too, mainly in the opener against Minnesota. If he wants to see more snaps as the true backup though, he has to keep his competition at bay. There are a couple of ways to do this.
The first thing he has to do is show value as a pass blocker. If he can show that he can pick up blitzes on passing plays, he will earn himself more playing time. Henderson has already shown a pretty good ability to do this, so Williams will have to get better at it.
Another way for Williams to see more snaps is to prove his worth as a pass-catcher. Being a threat out of the backfield in the passing game might be the best way for him to show value. Henderson is an average receiver right now but will only get better.
If Williams can improve enough to be a legitimate threat as a receiver, he’s going to command a lot more snaps. Williams isn’t going to have the explosiveness or the breakaway speed that Henderson has, so he has to do other things that he can do.
Henderson is still going to see the bulk of the snaps this season, as he should. Henderson has the ability to be a tremendous back. But Williams can still provide value to this Ohio State football team if he improves on some little things that would get him noticed.
