Ohio State Football: Ryan Day has a chance for best coaching job

Despite all of the noise surrounding what happened at the end of the season, Ryan Day still has a chance to make the Ohio State football team a national title contender next year. The Buckeyes clearly weren’t that in 2021, but Day can make it happen in 2022.

With all of the changes that he made on the defensive side of the ball, Ohio State can’t possibly be worse than what they were last year. But those changes alone won’t make the team automatic contenders. Day still has to make more adjustments on the fly this year.

Yes, Day made the decision to remove Kerry Coombs as the play-caller after the Oregon game. But Day didn’t make any adjustments in the middle of a game to make the defense any better. He really didn’t make too many adjustments on the offensive side of the ball either.

If Ohio State can win make the National Championship Game again this year though, it might be Day’s best coaching job. The defense still has a lot of questions surrounding it, and getting that unit to play well enough to make it to the final game would be quite an accomplishment.

The Ohio State football program has a proud history of strong defensive play. They don’t need to be great on defense this year though. In my opinion, they just need to be a top-25 defense to give this team a shot because of how dynamic the offense will be.

How well Day navigates the challenges of playing with a defense that still has some personnel issues that they need to address will define the 2022 season. A successful season could lead Day to get a big extension though. That would solidify Ohio State’s future for some time.
