A few days ago, I wrote about the fact that The Working Group was getting frustrated by a lack of movement towards Playoff expansion. A 12-team playoff would benefit the Ohio State football program as well as a lot of other programs across the country.

Now, we have clarity on when the soonest CFP expansion will happen. It seems like those in charge of actually making things happen want to continue sitting on their hands because the earliest anything could change is now in 2026, a year after their current deal with ESPN ends.

It’s a bummer that those with the power want to continue to squander a chance at making even more money than they do now. This is one of the rare things that would make college football fans happy and make more money for those in charge of the sport.

Gene Smith has said that he thinks expansion is indeed inevitable. Even so, another four years with just four teams is a bit of a bummer. Worse than that, it gives AD’s more of a chance to think of reasons why expansion would actually be a bad thing and how to screw it up even more.

If I’m being honest, I never wanted expansion past six teams. I thought the Power 5 conferences should’ve gotten automatic bids and then the highest Group of 5 champion would also get a bid. The top two seeds would get bye weeks and play the winners of the two games.

Now that that option seems to be off the table, I’m now of the opinion that a 12-team Playoff should get here as quickly as possible. I want to see how it can help other programs get the exposure that wouldn’t normally get a chance on the big stage.

Now we have to wait another four years for something to possibly happen.
