The Ohio State football team has had a great deal of success under Ryan Day in his three years leading the program. He has only lost two regular-season games in those three seasons, although both of them came just last year. That might be what’s keeping him from getting an extension.

In one of the many things Athletic Director Gene Smith talked about yesterday, he said he has not approached Day with the idea of a contract extension at this time. He did say that they would take a look at things at the appropriate time to do so. That isn’t surprising if you look at Day’s current deal.

Day just signed an extension after the 2019 season that runs through the 2026 season so there’s no rush to make any sort of changes at this point. Now if Day wins a national title within the next couple of years, they might change some of the financials at that point.

Right now though, there’s no reason for either side to be antsy about an extension. Smith needs to see if Day can avoid repeating what happened last year and Day has plenty of years of security on his deal. It wouldn’t make sense for extension talks to be happening this soon.

We’ll see what the financials might look like if Day does indeed win a national title. With Jim Harbaugh just signing an extension with TTUN, Day would need to be making more money than him if he does indeed win it all. That’s a pretty big if though.

Ohio State football fans shouldn’t worry about this right now. Quite frankly, they should be worried about Smith’s other comments regarding the state of the program. Day’s contract will work itself out in a few years’ time.
