Ohio State basketball gets more help towards Big Ten title goal

The Ohio State basketball team is chasing a dream of a Big Ten title this season. In order to do that, they have to take care of their own business. They certainly wouldn’t turn their nose up at some help though if it were to be provided to them.

It seems that help is exactly what they’ve gotten over the last couple of days. In the last two days, both Michigan State and Illinois have lost games. Michigan State got beaten by Penn State on Tuesday and Illinois, who leads the Big Ten, lost to Rutgers.

Illinois losing means that four teams are tied at the top in terms of losses. Ohio State, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Illinois are all tied with four losses within the conference. Of those teams, Ohio State still has to play Illinois only. They would lose a tiebreaker against Purdue because of their buzzer-beating loss to them.

The Buckeyes can only control what they can control. If they win the rest of their games, there’s an excellent shot that they will wind up winning the conference. Ohio State really only needed Illinois to lose one game to give them a really great shot. That has now happened.

Ohio State is not the favorite to win the title. Purdue is still widely considered the best team in the Big Ten. They have the most top-level talent of any of these teams except maybe Illinois. We’ll see if Purdue is able to win the rest of the games on their schedule.

The Ohio State basketball team is trying to do something that they haven’t done since Chris Holtmann has taken over. I’m not saying I don’t think they can do it, but it’s going to take everything they can possibly do in order to win the conference title.
