Ohio State Football: The top ten recruits of the Urban Meyer era
By Ryan Stano
may have only started for one season for the Buckeyes, but it was a great season. Because that season was so good, Haskins makes this list. He was chosen ahead of Joe Burrow to start in 2018, which was Urban’s last season as head coach.
Haskins was unbelievable in that one season, throwing for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He was so good that he was named a Heisman finalist. Although Haskins didn’t win the Heisman Trophy, he played well enough to be one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL Draft.
Haskins was a first-round pick in the Draft after his monster season. Although his pro career hasn’t panned out to this point, that doesn’t have any bearing on his status as one of the Ohio State football program’s best quarterbacks in recent history.
The Buckeyes were starting to show that they were a quarterback factory at this point. Quarterbacks who were playing in this offense were putting up a bunch of numbers, and it was leading to team success. Haskins was the first one to be a first-round pick since Art Schlichter in 1982.
Haskins was a four-star recruit out of school and it’s safe to say he more than lived up to his billing in college. I’d argue he played like a five-star recruit by setting all of those Big Ten records. He definitely belongs on this list.
The next player on this list is once again a member of the defensive backfield.
