Ohio State football: Joe Burrow is a Buckeye and you’re going to have to deal with that
By Del Barris
There sure are a lot of message board trolls who have their britches in a bunch because Ohio State football fans like to claim Joe Burrow as a Buckeye. They take it as a sign Buckeye Nation is trying to horn in on LSU’s success.
Well, that just makes a lot of sense because we all know the Ohio State football program hasn’t had any success at all in recent years (insert that eye roll emoji here). Nor have any of their alumni had much success in the NFL (insert that eye roll emoji here multiple times).
You’d think all these trolls have to do all day is chirp at fans from other teams on message boards and play video games in their mom’s basement. Well, yeah, that’s pretty much what they’re doing, but let’s try to use facts and reason on them to help them understand.
Before transferring to LSU, Joe Burrow graduated from college. The school on his diploma is The Ohio State University. That makes him an alumna of the school. He may not have completed his football eligibility with the Buckeyes, but he completed his undergraduate education there and that gives the green light for OSU fans to claim him, in part, as a Buckeye.
If the trolls don’t like my logic, maybe they’ll finally accept Burrow as a Buckeye if it comes from ol’ Joe himself,
"“I’m definitely still a Buckeye, I graduated from there, I still have relationships to this day that I wouldn’t have without being there.”"
There it is, folks. Joe Burrow himself said it: he’s STILL a Buckeye. Is that good enough for all of you trolls? Does hearing it from him put this to rest for you? He went on to elaborate,
"“I’m still in contact with Coach Mick (strength and conditioning coordinator Mick Marotti) and Coach Day and Corey (quarterbacks coach Corey Dennis) and all those guys. I’m still a Buckeye and for everybody who doesn’t know, Isaiah Prince (Cincinnati’s starting right tackle) was in my recruiting class at Ohio State. And after the game, we kind of reminisce about the times we had in the dorms, see each other out on High Street. We just said we’ve come a long way.”"
Burrow isn’t claimed by Ohio State football fans simply because he graduated from the school and was a part of the football program. He’s cheered on because of who he is. Joe Burrow is a class act and a winner. Unlike “Ohioans” such as Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson who almost literally thumb their noses at their home state, the Athens native embraces it. You can’t help but like the guy.
He addressed the question himself. He’s also a graduate of the school. Joe Burrow is a Buckeye and you’re going to have to deal with that.
