Ohio State Football: Is Harry Miller the odd man out?
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team had to play all of 2021 without Harry Miller. He suffered an injury and then never suited up for the Buckeyes. Luke Wypler came in and started at center and played well enough to presumably keep that spot in 2022. Where does that leave Miller?
The answer to that question could be on the bench. Even though the Buckeyes lose only two offensive linemen to the draft, they already have replacements lined up behind them. The Buckeyes only lose Nicholas Petit-Frere and Thayer Munford.
Paris Johnson Jr. will likely swing back out to tackle, which is his natural position. That leaves Wypler, and Dawand Jones as the other two starters from last season that are back. Donovan Jackson is expected to come in and take one of the guard spots available.
That leaves one spot left at guard. Miller has played some guard at Ohio State but has had a very up-and-down career so far. It’s quite possible that he gets passed up on the depth chart by someone like Josh Fryar or Enokk Vimahi. Miller is going to have to fight for that spot.
It’s a bummer for Miller that Wypler played so well at center while Miller was out. He has no chance of reclaiming that spot this Fall. He just has to work as hard as he possibly can to keep himself healthy and show that he can play guard well.
The offensive line is not an area of concern when it comes to pass protection. It is a concern when it comes to run blocking. The Ohio State football team struggled to get push up front when they needed to run the ball. Justin Frye is going to have his work cut out for him in fixing that issue.
Miller’s fight is just one of many things I will be watching once Spring ball rolls around.
