Ohio State Football: Son of a legend becomes a Buckeye
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team got some good news on a Sunday filled with football. The Buckeyes had offered Will Smith Jr., son of former Buckeye All-American Will Smith, a few weeks ago. Now, Smith Jr. has decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a Buckeye too.
Smith Jr. committed to the Ohio State football program on Sunday as a three-star prospect. He is a defensive lineman out of Dublin-Coffman High School. He’s a local product and the son of a legend who has a lot of talent himself too. Three stars don’t tell the whole story.
Smith stands at 6’3 and 260 pounds. He can play inside and out on the end as well. He’ll probably end up at defensive end just like his dad. Also like his father, he can rush the passer very well. He uses his hands well at the line of scrimmage and uses his leverage to get past offensive linemen.
Of course, with a name like that, he’s going to be compared to his dad the moment he steps on campus. That’s going to be a hard name to live up to because his dad was an All-American and a first-round pick. I’m not saying Jr. can’t do that too, but it’s going to take a lot of work.
No matter how Smith’s Ohio State career goes, this is still a nice story. It’s always cool when a legend has their kid follow in their footsteps and go to the school they went to. It’s cool to keep that legacy alive. He could also be a really good player in a couple of years.
Smith Jr. needs a couple of years, but he could be a valuable player for this defensive line. He just needs a little time to have some college coaching.
