How to properly asses this Ohio State basketball team
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State basketball team has had a very up-and-down season so far. They have had injuries to deal with, games canceled or postponed because of COVID, and another slight January slide. The Buckeyes right now sit at 12-4 and are ranked at 19th in the country.
So where does this leave this team? What is the ceiling for the team? We still don’t know. That’s the problem. The Buckeyes haven’t had a healthy squad yet this season. Neither Justice Sueing nor Seth Towns have played in a single game. Those are two big pieces for this team.
I don’t have faith that Towns will ever be healthy enough to play a big role on this team. Sueing though seems to be close to coming back according to Chris Holtmann. He would be a good piece to add to the team. He’s a good defender that can switch on to other guys and he can create his own shot.
As currently constituted, the Buckeyes have still beaten some good teams. They’ve beaten Wisconsin, Seton Hall, and Duke. Those are some excellent wins. The problem is that this team still doesn’t play to its full potential on a night-to-night basis.
We’re halfway through the season and we still have no idea how good this team can be. We’ll soon find out next weekend when they take on Purdue at Mackey Arena. Purdue is a very good team and is one of the top teams in the Big Ten. That game might tell us if they can play with the big boys or not.
I don’t think we’ll ever see how this Ohio State basketball team plays with its full roster. I don’t think the roster will ever be fully healthy, so it will be up to the current roster to play better.
