Ohio State Football: Tate Martell’s journey comes to an end
By Ryan Stano
When Tate Martell Joined the Ohio State football program back in 2017, he had high hopes for his football career. He was on the show “QB1” when he was in high school and was a highly-touted recruit. He looked like someone who could eventually lead Ohio State to some wins.
As we all know, that did not end up happening. After playing sparingly as a redshirt freshman, he transferred out of the program once Justin Fields made his way to Columbus. He transferred to Miami where he was promptly beaten out for the starting quarterback job.
After a failed attempt at moving to wide receiver, Martell transferred to UNLV to be closer to home in 2021. He only threw a total of six passes for them and never got any substantial playing time. Now, his time in football has come to an end after a long, winding journey.
Martell announced his retirement from football on Tuesday evening, marking an end to his odd five-year journey through college football. He played for three different schools and never really made an impact on any of them. He’ll probably be most remembered for being used as a goal-line QB at Ohio State in 2018.
Martell had some decent skills, but seemed too cocky to fully put the work in that was necessary to be great. He never seemed to learn from his mistakes to get better. Unfortunately, that’s why he never got the chance to be a starting quarterback no matter where he was.
I hope other quarterbacks look at Martell as a cautionary tale of what can happen when you don’t put in the necessary work. I also think Martell knows that’s why he never was able to succeed too. He said he was going to focus on his business now that his playing days are over.
I hope Martell does have a successful business and is able to live a happy life. I just wish he would have taken football a little more seriously. Other Ohio State football fans share the same sentiment.
