Ohio State Football: Carson Hinzman confirms Bucks over Badgers commitment
By Charles Post
Carson Hinzman, a 4-star offensive lineman who competed in the 2022 All-American Bowl on Saturday in San Antonio, committed to the Ohio State football program over Wisconsin earlier this week. Hinzman is the second-highest-rated prospect from Wisconsin and is ranked sixth in the country among interior offensive linemen per 247 Sports. The Saint Croix Central senior grew up a big Badgers football fan before choosing the Buckeyes on Tuesday.
“Everything in my life was Badgers football and I loved it. They were a huge inspiration for me growing up, and seeing guys like JJ Watt making it big was awesome, so it made this decision extremely close,” Hinzman told me after his commitment to Ohio State over hometown Wisconsin. “It was crazy! I’m so unbelievably blessed to be in the situation I was in and it was the best problem I think you could possibly have.”
Hinzman didn’t commit during the early signing period in mid-December because he was still deciding between the two Big Ten schools. The 6’4 guard joined fellow offensive lineman Tegra Tshabola, George Fitzpatrick, and Avery Henry as part of Ryan Day’s 2022 recruiting class. The Buckeyes offensive line unit will operate differently next year with UCLA’s Justin Frye rumored to be replacing Greg Studrawa. Hinzman is likely going to play guard or center down the road.
“It’s a business. I’m not committed to a coach, I’m committed to the people and the culture. I’m excited to get to work there. Not only for one coach, I’m doing it for myself and my family. I’m a man of my word and I’m going to keep that promise for as long as I can,” Hinzman explained regarding Studrawa’s firing on Thursday. “I feel like their culture really stems from the people there. Not just one or two coaches. I’m excited to experience that.”
After earning scholarship offers from Alabama, Auburn, Iowa, LSU, Michigan, Miami, Minnesota, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and others, Hinzman said Ohio State’s “championship-winning culture” was a big factor in his final decision. Day offered the Wisconsin product on June 12, 2021, and he visited Columbus when the Ohio State football team played Oregon and Penn State. Hinzman was also a Man of the Year award finalist at the All-American Bowl this week.
He started at right guard and was a captain for the West team on Saturday afternoon, competing with six other future Buckeyes including 4-stars defensive lineman Caden Curry, quarterback Devin Brown and standout receiver Kyion Grayes.
Five other Ohio State football commits were in Texas for the event but couldn’t play. Hinzman allowed a couple of quarterback hurries but was solid throughout multiple scoring drives during the 31-24 win.
