The Ohio State football team moved on from the six-year offensive line coach Greg Studrawa Thursday afternoon. Now, it seems the Buckeyes have found their new offensive line coach, Justin Frye.

At only 38-years-old, Frye has moved his way up college football rather quickly. He was the O-line coach at Temple in the 2011-12 season, followed by Boston College in 2013-2018, and then his latest stint in UCLA starting in 2018.

The hire also makes sense due to Frye’s connections with Ryan Day. He coached under Urban Meyer at Florida as a graduate assistant during 2009 and 2010 and coached with Day at BC. Also, Frye has been under Chip Kelly — who is Day’s mentor — at UCLA.

Frye has turned around several run games

Frye was a run game coordinator at Boston College as well, and an offensive coordinator at UCLA. When Frye took over as the offensive line coach and run game coordinator at BC, their rushing attack dramatically improved. Before the hire, the Eagles averaged under 100 rushing yards per game, which then jumped to over 200 yards per game in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

At UCLA, Frye once again helped turn around a rushing attack. The Bruins averaged over 200 rushing yards per game in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

Hopefully, the emerging offensive line coach can help bring an upgrade to the Buckeyes’ run game as well. Over the past two seasons, the Scarlet and Gray have fielded an inconsistent rushing attack, which was part of the reason for Studrawa’s departure.

The clear question for Frye is how will he recruit? During his time at Boston College and UCLA, he landed only two four-star recruits along the offensive line. However, Ohio State has substantially more appeal to recruits compared to Frye’s past employers.

During Studrawa’s time at Ohio State, the largest concern was his losses in recruiting. Therefore, questioning how well Frye can recruit is understandable. In the end, Frye is a young and upcoming success story that has helped turn around multiple run games at both UCLA and Boston College. If the new O-line coach has success at OSU, the recruiting will follow.

The hiring of Frye as Ohio State football’s new offensive line coach and run game coordinator should be officially announced sooner rather than later. Day’s decision to pry Frye away from UCLA makes plenty of sense due to Frye’s experience in turning around run games and being a young and hungry up-and-coming talent in college football.
