Ohio State Football: Firing Coach Studrawa shows Ryan Day isn’t satisfied
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team continues to make changes to the coaching staff after a very up and down 2021 season. Offensively, they had some of the best overall numbers in the country. Even so, Ryan Day has elected to make a change on that side of the ball.
Coach Stud is no more, as Day decided to fire Greg Studrawa today. The former offensive line coach leaves after having been at Ohio State since 2016. Now, the Buckeyes have to find a new offensive line coach for 2022 and beyond.
Stud wasn’t a terrible coach by any means. He was a pretty decent recruiter and was able to get back-to-back number one tackles in Nicholas Petit-Frere and Paris Johnson Jr. But it was his inability to further develop the offensive line in the run game that ultimately did him in.
Ohio State struggled to run the ball at critical times this season. That inability to run is why Day had to make a change. Day isn’t satisfied with an average run game. He wants that rushing attack to be lethal. Too many times this year it was inefficient because of a lack of victory at the line of scrimmage.
This coaching change shows that the Buckeyes aren’t satisfied at just being pretty good. Day wants this program to be elite. He knows that 2021 wasn’t a good enough season. He is actively trying to fix the issues that plagued the program this season.
His ability to fix those problems will ultimately define his legacy as the leader of the Ohio State football program. He needs to show that he can identify good coaches to replace the ones he let go. The schedule in 2022 will let us know real quick whether or not he’s succeeded at that.
The coaching changes aren’t finished with this program either. I’d expect at least one or two more changes to occur with the staff within the next week or so. We’ll keep you advised on that front.
