Legendary bombshell Mae West once said, “Too much of a good thing is wonderful!” Well, in the case of the Ohio State football program, all of the good recruiting news recently has been wonderful. On Christmas Day, former Arizona State running back-turned-linebacker DeaMonte Trayanum announced he is transferring to Ohio State.

Defensive back Cedric Hawkins committed to the Buckeyes for their 2023 recruiting class during the Rose Bowl. Sunday, elite defensive end Omari Abor joined their 2022 class. Within the last 24 hours, OSU got a double dose of good news.

Late Tuesday afternoon, the Buckeyes got the news they had won a major recruiting battle with Wisconsin for Carson Hinzman, the nation’s number six interior offensive lineman. This is a noteworthy accomplishment for the Ohio State staff because Hinzman is from Wisconsin.

The Badgers nearly always manage to keep linemen of this quality at home, so a lot of credit needs to go to Buckeye offensive line coach Greg Studrawa. I’ve maintained for the Buckeyes to run the ball more effectively, they need true guards instead of tackles who have been moved inside.

Hinzman fits that need perfectly. He also fills a big need in the Buckeyes’ 2022 recruiting class-they had not yet signed a guard or center. At 6’4”, 280 pounds, he will need to put on weight but is the perfect height for a guard.

Earlier today, the Ohio State defense got a much-needed boost to their backend when former Oklahoma State transfer safety Tanner McCalister announced he is joining the program. I recently called him a must-have transfer (read that article here) because he fills a big need on the OSU defense.

He is obviously very familiar with new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles’ scheme after playing for him the last few seasons. He’s started 21 games for the Cowboys and made 75 tackles. There is a possibility McCalister will play cover safety, another area of need after we saw a revolving door of various starters there this year. Regardless of where he lines up for the Buckeyes, he should give the defense immediate help.

Hopefully, this string of good things continues for the Buckeyes, because Mae West was right.
