An Ohio State football fan’s guide on who to root for in the CFP
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team won’t be playing in the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2018. They still play in a really nice bowl game, but they won’t get a chance for a national title. That is a bummer for sure for most Buckeye fans around the country.
That doesn’t mean that Buckeye fans can’t watch the games and have a rooting interest in what happens. It might be hard for Ohio State football fans to decide who to root for considering who the options are, but I think I’ve found the best-case scenario for Buckeye fans.
In the first CFP game, the Cotton Bowl, the rooting choice is easier than you think. It’s Alabama against Cincinnati. Even though rooting for Cincinnati means rooting for them to be the best team in the state of Ohio, that’s better than rooting for SEC foe Alabama.
In the second CFP game, the Orange Bowl, that rooting choice is much easier. TTUN takes on Georgia in a game that should be the better of the two games. Obviously, no Ohio State fan in their right mind would want TTUN to play for a national championship, so Georgia is the pick here.
The ideal scenario for Buckeye fans is that the Bearcats and Bulldogs face off for a national title. In that scenario, Having Cincinnati is what Buckeye fans should want. All Buckeye fans hate the SEC and every team in that conference, so having another SEC team win a national title would be less than ideal.
Hopefully, this is a one-off scenario for Ohio State football fans. Hopefully, they’re playing in the CFP next year and Buckeye fans can just root for their own team to win it all.
