Ohio State Football: Garrett Wilson opts-out, leaves OSU after three years
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team will take on Utah in the Rose Bowl at the end of the week. They hadn’t had anyone officially opt-out for a while, at least publicly. Well, that has now changed. They will be without one of the best receivers on the team.
Garrett Wilson has announced that he is leaving Ohio State after three years. This comes as no surprise considering he is expected to be a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He also hadn’t been seen at practice leading up to the Rose Bowl either. It’s not a shocker to anyone.
Wilson leaves Ohio State as a great player. He was a five-star recruit out of Texas and lived up to the billing. He ends his career with 143 catches for 2,213 and 23 touchdowns. He also had a rushing touchdown this year against Purdue as part of a four-touchdown day.
Wilson is going to make whatever NFL team takes him very happy for a long time. He has great hands and is an excellent route runner. Not only that, but he does a great job of getting yards after the catch. He could end up being a top-ten pick before it’s all said and done.
As far as the Ohio State football team is concerned, this will hurt them a bit against Utah. Despite having such a loaded receiver room, Wilson may have been the best of the bunch. They will now lean on Chris Olave and Jaxon Smith-Njibga even more than they normally do.
I don’t think this opt-out is enough for the Buckeyes to lose this game, so this shouldn’t cause panic. They still have plenty of playmakers that can spread the field and gain yards on offense. We wish Wilson nothing but the best of luck at the next level! We’ll be watching!
