The Ohio State football team didn’t have the type of season they wanted to. A large reason for that is the shortcomings of the coaching staff surrounding Ryan Day. Day went ahead and hired a new defensive coordinator after the final game of the regular season, but hasn’t done anything since.

There have been no changes to the staff since then. The question is, why? I understand that Day may want to wait until after the Rose Bowl to do some things. But again, I ask why wait that long? If you do that, all of the other assistant coaches will be picked over.

I already laid out the other coaching changes that should happen. Even independent of those changes, we still don’t know what is going to happen with either Kerry Coombs or Matt Barnes. I know that Day wanted to keep them both on staff until the bowl game, but is that the right move?

Ultimately, Day will be judged on what he does this offseason and how those moves either help or detract from the team’s success over the next few years. If he does nothing with the rest of the staff, that could end up being a detriment to this team’s potential.

The recruiting was pretty good for this class, as it was for the last class. That recruiting is what is likely saving some of these assistants at the moment. But if those same assistants haven’t been able to develop that talent effectively, then what’s the point?

The success of the Ohio State football program in the short term will hinge on how well some of these moves, or non-moves, go. The Buckeyes have a tough schedule next season. We’re going to find out really quickly how well this team is put together from coaching staff to player personnel.
