We all know who the Ohio State basketball team’s best player is. E.J. Liddell has gotten even better from last year and is one of the best players in the country. He has a real shot to win National Player of the Year the way he is playing right now for this team.

The problem is, the frontcourt is so much better than the backcourt. The Buckeyes don’t really have a guard that can take over stretches of games when Liddell or Zed Key is in foul trouble. They need someone else who can create their own shot in pressure situations.

There are a few candidates on this team who can fit that bill. Jamari Wheeler is someone who could fit that mold. He is shooting 47% from the field and 37% on threes. While he is only averaging 6.3 points per game, he has shown the ability to get to the rim off the bounce.

Meechie Johnson is the other player I’m looking for to possibly fit this role. Johnson has already hit some big shots this season, hitting the game-winning three against Seton Hall earlier in the year. He also can get to spots off the dribble and create his own shots.

No matter who it is, this is the last step that this Ohio State basketball team needs to take to be a truly great team. They have all of the other pieces around them. They just need one other guy who can get them out of a tough situation late in games. That could be the difference come March.

Next. Be grateful for 2021 Ohio State Football season. dark

We still have a couple of months to find out who this player might be. Hopefully, this is something that the Buckeyes can find out sooner than that though. It would make Ohio State fans feel a lot better if someone stepped up soon.
