Ohio State Football: Urban Meyer’s apology rings hollow
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football program hasn’t had to worry about Urban Meyer for a few years. While he was in Columbus, he was one of the best coaches in school history. He won a national championship and helped the Buckeyes make the College Football Playoff twice.
But even during those times, there were rumblings around Columbus about Meyer and who he was as a person. We knew as fans that he wasn’t a good person, but we didn’t care. As long as Ohio State was winning games, that’s all that really mattered to us.
After Meyer’s epic failure in Jacksonville, his apology rings hollow. He opposes accusations of player abuse and yelling at the coaches. The fact is, he’s always done some bad things as a coach. It just didn’t matter before because he was winning games wherever he went in college.
Now that Meyer is out in Jacksonville, he’s untouchable. He won’t get another NFL job ever again. I’d be surprised if he gets another job in college. His true colors have been shown now to the entire country. What was known in Columbus, Gainsville, and other college stops is now known everywhere.
If Meyer can con someone into rushing him again I’d be very surprised. I’d also be lying to you if I said I was outraged by the things I heard while he was coaching the Buckeyes. While there have never been any reports of any abuse of players, I do know he had a physical altercation with a former coach.
That coach has gone on to have a much more successful career than Meyer has now. It seems as though he got the last laugh. I know that Meyer says he’s sorry, but he’s never changed his behavior. Why would any team trust him to ever do so?
