Ohio State Football: 3 top candidates to be new defensive coordinator
By Ryan Stano
Ohio State football fans are very familiar with the last name “Tressel”. Jim won a national title in Columbus and is the reason why the Buckeyes started winning so many games against TTUN. Mike is his nephew and has done a very good job coordinating defenses.
Tressel has been in the Big Ten before. While he is currently at Cincinnati and enjoying a chance to play in the College Football Playoff, he was in East Lansing from 2007-2020. He was defensive coordinator for them for four years, including the year they made the CFP in 2015.
Now, Tressel is back in the state of Ohio with the Bearcats. He was a GA with Ohio State back in 2002 and 2003. He loves the Buckeyes and would undoubtedly love to coach here again. Day could do a lot worse than hiring someone like Tressel.
Michigan State was a thorn in Ohio State’s side in the mid-2010s. Tressel was part of some of those teams. His recruiting was pretty good at a place like MSU and would only be better with the resources available at a place like Ohio State.
While Tressel might not be the sexiest hire on this list, he would still be a solid choice. He would be loved by the fanbase and someone who knows how to succeed in the Big Ten. Day could do a lot worse than hiring someone like Tressel.
No matter who Day decides to hire, it needs to be someone good. The defense needs to have structural changes, and the current coaches aren’t getting the job done. Something new needs to happen. Any of these three candidates would be great choices.
