Ohio State Football vs. Michigan State: 3 keys for a Buckeye win
By Riley Thomas
2. The turnover battle could be the deciding factor in a close game
If Ohio State’s O-line plays poorly, this game will probably be a close one. The Buckeye offense could begin to stumble and this will turn into a heavyweight battle.
More times than not, the turnover battle can determine these types of games. The Silver Bullets have developed a knack for forcing turnovers since their improvement after losing to Oregon in Week 2.
Michigan State’s quarterback Payton Thorne has been up and down this season. At times, he makes poor decisions or can light defenses up. Through 10 games, Thorne has thrown eight interceptions, he had multi-pick games vs. Michigan and Indiana.
Meanwhile, Ohio State’s defense is averaging nearly two takeaways per game (29th). Buckeye defensive backs have been able to make plays on the ball, making opposing QBs pay. If the defensive line can rattle Thorn in passing situations, OSU’s secondary has a good chance of grabbing picks.
The Scarlet and Gray also rank eighth in turnover margin at +0.9 per game. In addition, the Spartans average 1.3 giveaways per game (61st). MSU has been somewhat prone to turning the ball over, and this will end up being a major positive for Ohio State if they can take advantage of it.
As mentioned, the turnover battle will become even more vital if this turns into a close game. Forcing turnovers will still be a key no matter what, it could also turn this into a blowout win for the Buckeyes. Regardless, the turnover battle must be won by the Ohio State football team.
