The Ohio State football team has done a good job of playing since they lost to Oregon in Week 2. They’ve won every game that they’ve played and have mostly looked good doing so. That wasn’t enough to put them in the top four in the first CFP rankings though.

Ohio State comes in at 5th in the first edition of the rankings this year. They sit behind Georgia, Alabama, Michigan State, and Oregon. They are just ahead of undefeated Cincinnati, Michigan, and undefeated Oklahoma and Wake Forest.

First off, it’s ridiculous that Alabama is listed second with a loss. There’s an argument for them to be in the top four, just not second. Certainly not ahead of Michigan State, who has the best win in the country right now by beating previously undefeated Michigan just a week ago.

Secondly, this signals the Ohio State football team needs just a little bit of help. They need Georgia to beat Bama in the SEC Championship Game to make sure that they get in for sure. It does help immensely. But as long as they take care of business and beat Michigan State, they should get up into the top four.

It helps a lot that the committee doesn’t seem to respect Oklahoma. They are so far down the rankings that the Buckeyes probably don’t need to worry about them. A loss would certainly help, but it doesn’t seem necessary at this point. There’s only one team to worry about behind them.

That team in Cincinnati. While they sit at sixth while being undefeated, they can still cause some problems. If they blow everyone else out on their schedule and Notre Dame keeps winning, they will have a compelling case to jump into that top four.

The bottom line is this: take care of business and you should be in. Keep winning against 3rd ranked Michigan State and 7th ranked Michigan and you should be okay. There are also three Big Ten West teams that are ranked that they could play in the Big Ten Championship Game.
