Ohio State Football: Five mid-season awards
By Ryan Stano
Ohio State football Offensive Player of the Year
This is an award that I thought was going to be really hard to pick a winner in when the season started. There are so many good players on this team on the offensive side of the ball that it’s an embarrassment of riches. The Buckeyes average the most yards of any team in the country.
The winner of this award goes to TreVeyon Henderson and I didn’t think too hard about it honestly. The freshman has been the most dynamic player on the field with the ball in his hands. His emergence has helped this offense hit the ceiling that it is hitting now.
Despite perhaps his worst performance this past weekend against Maryland, he was still valuable in that game. Maryland stacked the box to try to stop him, and that opened up the passing game. C.J. Stroud had over 400 yards passing and 5 touchdowns because of it.
I also mentioned how Saturday may have been his worst performance; he still ran for 102 yards, a touchdown, and averaged 6.4 yards per carry. He also caught 4 balls for 67 yards and another score. This guy can truly do it all and is starting to become a Heisman contender.
Henderson will only continue to get better as the season goes on. His presence in the backfield has allowed the passing game to grow to the point that it is now and really unlocks the entire offense. He has truly been the best offensive player so far.
The next award on this list is the exact same award, just for the defensive side of the ball.
