Ohio State Football: TreVeyon Henderson emerging as Heisman threat
By Ryan Stano
Most people thought that if an Ohio State football player was going to be a candidate for the Heisman that it was going to be C.J. Stroud. Most Heisman winners are quarterbacks nowadays anyway. That has proven to not be the case this season as someone else has emerged.
That someone else is true freshman TreVeyon Henderson. Henderson is clearly the next great Ohio State running back following a long list of others. Henderson was recently announced as the only true freshman on the Maxwell Award watchlist, which honors the country’s best player.
Henderson has shown an incredible burst so far this season, and that’s with sharing carries in every game. He only had 8 carries last game but took them for 71 yards and a score. He was held out in the second half as a precaution because of an injury.
On the season, Henderson has 510 yards and 7 touchdowns on the ground, averaging a whopping 9.4 yards per carry. He never seems to be tackled backward and always keeps his legs churning. He also has 3 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown, most of those coming on that electric swing pass against Minnesota.
The only thing holding Henderson back from being a serious threat to win the award is a lack of carries. The Buckeyes have insisted on spreading the ball around in the run game. That will likely cease after the next couple of games when they start playing hard competition again.
If Henderson puts up big numbers against Michigan State, Penn State, and Michigan, he very well could be on his way to New York by the end of the season. That is especially true if the Buckeyes win all of their games and play for a Big Ten title.
We have a long way to go before any of that, but it’s good to think about it now. All Ohio State football fans should be excited about this guy.
