Justin Fields should start for the rest of the season
By Ryan Stano
Former Ohio State football player Justin Fields will get his first NFL start on Sunday when he plays the Browns. He gets the start because Andy Dalton is out with a knee injury. Dalton could be out for multiple weeks with that injury as well, so it will be Fields’ show.
Even when Dalton is healthy enough to come back and play, Fields should still start for the rest of the season. At this point, it makes no sense to go back to a veteran that has a certain ceiling attached to him as opposed to letting a rookie with uncapped potential play.
Matt Nagy even said this week after naming Fields the starter that Dalton would be the starter when he comes back healthy. My question is, why? What happens if Fields lights the world on fire? Are you gonna sit him then if the Bears win a bunch of games in a row?
Keeping Fields out there is what’s best for the organization in the long term. He can take his lumps, learn, and get better throughout this rookie season. It also gives the Bears a chance to evaluate him to make sure that he is indeed their quarterback of the future.
The fans would also make it tough to put Dalton back out there. The fans have been clamoring for Justin Fields to start ever since he was drafted. To put Dalton back out there would be a slap in the face of everyone that supports the team. Nagy would certainly get fired if he did that.
In the end, perhaps the only way for Nagy to save his job is to play Fields for the rest of the season. We’ll see if he ends up doing that or if he stays stubborn until the very end.
