Justin Fields looks bad in first real NFL action
By Ryan Stano
Former Ohio State football player Justin Fields got his first real taste of action in Sunday’s game against the Bengals. It ended up being a battle of two former Ohio State quarterbacks in Fields and Joe Burrow after Bears starter Andy Dalton went down with an injury.
Neither former Buckeye played well in this game. Bears fans have been clamoring for Fields to start all season long. I’ve tended to agree, but Sunday’s performance made me reconsider it a bit. Fields was only 6/13 for 60 yards and an interception. He also ran it 10 times for just 31 yards.
While the Bears did get the win in this one, it has to be a bit disheartening to watch him play so poorly. He was never able to get a rhythm in this game though because of poor offensive line play. That’s one thing that fans of Fields can point to as to why he played poorly.
Even if Fields didn’t have his best game, he still has the most upside in that quarterback room. He is just a rookie and will continue to develop to the NFL game when he gets more snaps. He just needs playing time to go out there and learn from his mistakes.
I believe that Fields gives the Bears the best chance to win long-term. We know what Dalton is already. Fields’ potential raises the ceiling for the Chicago team and makes them the best possible version of themselves. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Fields will get that chance anytime soon,
Matt Nagy has been steadfast that Dalton is the starter for the foreseeable future. The only way Justin Fields would start is if Dalton continues to miss time due to injury. It’s unclear how bad his injury is, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
