Ohio State Football: Three questions they must answer against Tulsa
By Alex Austin
Ohio State needs to figure out what they are doing at defensive coordinator before the teams get difficult.
There has been plenty of clamoring for Kerry Coombs to lose his job. Coombs seems like a great guy, and he has a talent for recruiting and motivating, but it seems that he may not be ready to be a defensive coordinator. Dropping him to a position coach (assuming he would stay) sounds fine, but the question becomes who fills his spot.
Currently, on the Ohio State coaching staff, there are 0 coaches with previous defensive coordinating experience. Before Ryan Day starts firing or demoting people, he better have a Plan B, and right now there is not a clear option on the staff.
Day could use these next two weeks to try someone new and see how they do, but that is a small sample size to put trust in someone moving forward in a year where the Buckeyes cannot pick up another loss if they want to make the College Football Playoffs.
I agree that Kerry Coombs will need to find a new role, but I do not think Ryan Day knows who is ready to step into that spot on the defensive staff. Against Tulsa, Ohio State needs an answer.
