The Ohio State football team lost their first regular-season game in the Ryan Day era. On Saturday, they lost to Oregon 35-28. It was a game that was supposed to be celebrated as the return of fans into the Shoe. Instead, it was a bitterly disappointing loss.

A lot of blame has been thrown around after the loss. The offense has gotten some. The defense has gotten some. I myself put some blame on DC Kerry Coombs. All of them bare some blame, but not the lion’s share. There’s one person who should get most of the blame.

That person is head coach Ryan Day. Day is the one who is leading the program. As the head coach, he has to take responsibility for every win, loss, and everything in between that goes on within the Ohio State football program. This loss is on him for a few different reasons.

One of them is that he is in control of the offense. Despite gaining 612 yards of total offense, the Buckeyes only put up 28 points. They were held scoreless in the first quarter completely. If you’re an elite offense with that much talent, you can’t be held scoreless in any quarter of football.

Another reason why the loss is his fault is that he is the leader of the whole team. He has the authority to make changes in any part of the gameplan on either side of the ball. If he really wanted to have the defense change schemes, he would have walked right up to Kerry Coombs and told him to do so.

Day will have to learn from his mistakes if he wants to have any chance of salvaging this season. The Buckeyes have to win the rest of their games if they want to have any sort of shot at making the College Football Playoff.

In order for this team to do that, Day will have to make some tough decisions.
