Ohio State Football: C.J. Stroud did not lose the Oregon game
By Alex Austin
Stroud is receiving the majority of his criticism from two plays that came late in the game when Ohio State was trying to tie it up with Oregon.
There are two plays toward the end of the game that are generating the majority of the criticism against Stroud; the overthrow on Wilson that would have gone for a touchdown and the interception.
On the Wilson throw, he missed the open receiver. He did have Wilson and overthrew him by about a step. This play hurt because of how much Ohio State needed to score. While this was a miss, I think Stroud is getting an unfair amount of blame for the team being in this position.
He did miss a throw, but that is a throw that plenty of quarterbacks before him have missed, and it should not overshadow the work he did to put his team in a position to tie the game.
On his interception, he missed his receiver high which ultimately made it an easy grab for the defender. I will not defend the throw since he flat-out missed it. What I will defend is a lot of comments I have seen is that he should have run the ball instead.
In this play, Stroud had a man open with defenders closing in. Rather than taking a sack or a minimal run, I would prefer he find the open man or throw the ball away. He made the right decision here, he just missed the throw.
