Let me be very clear about something; Seth Towns can still be a contributing member of the Ohio State basketball team. I think he’s a great young man and a phenomenal leader. I also think that it’s time for Buckeye basketball fans to give up the pipe dream.

Towns won’t be a great small forward off the bench that can give you 15 points a game. That’s what everyone, including me, hoped he could do after transferring from Harvard. But the kid just cannot say healthy, and his body has let him down yet again.

After tearing up his knee twice at Harvard, now his back has given out. He had back surgery yesterday and will be out for several months. Best case scenario, he returns in December. Even then, he will have to, once again, get used to playing basketball games.

Towns’ basketball career has been marred by injury. He wasn’t given the opportunity to truly reach the ceiling that he could have because of his body. This just happens with some guys. Towns is clearly one of those guys that got bitten by the injury bug.

When, or if, Towns comes back this season, he won’t amount to much. He might be someone that can knock down a few jump shots. He certainly won’t be a high enough level player to live up to the expectations that Ohio State basketball fans had for him when he came in.

This situation is just very unfortunate. I’m not sure if Towns could potentially redshirt somehow and then play next season too, but that seems unlikely since he already had a medical redshirt in his collegiate career. It’s just too bad this had to happen.

We wish Towns a speedy recovery and hope he can get back on the basketball court as soon as possible!
