Ohio State Football: Three keys to victory vs. Oregon
By Ryan Stano
Get tight ends involved
The tight ends were supposed to be a bigger part of the game plan in 2021. The Buckeyes have one of the best ones in the country in Jeremy Ruckert. He did a lot of good things late in the season in 2020 and was looking to follow that with a big 2021.
Unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance to do a whole lot against Minnesota. Ruckert was the only tight end who caught a pass in the opener and only caught one for 15 yards. Day did say that he had more plays drawn up for Ruckert, but they weren’t able to use them.
They weren’t able to use them because the Buckeyes scored so fast. Their longest touchdown-scoring drive was 7 plays, so they weren’t really in a spot in the red zone to use him much. While it’s nice to have explosive options like Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson, expect Ruckert to get more targets.
Getting Ruckert involved makes this offense even more dangerous. This is a game that could end up being a shootout, so the Buckeye could need someone like him to step up late in this game for a big first down or a touchdown close to the goal line.
If the Ohio State football team does these three things on Saturday afternoon, they should be starting the season 2-0 and looking good early in the CFP conversation.
