Ohio State Football: Big Ten roundup Week 1
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team got a 45-31 victory on Thursday night to give themselves a 1-0 start on the season and a 1-0 start in Big Ten play. They have larger aspirations than just the Big Ten Championship of course, but they start out on a good path for that too.
How did the rest of the Big Ten do in their Week 1 games? It was a mixed bag and there were certainly some surprising results. Perhaps no result was more surprising for me than Iowa destroying Indiana 34-6. Iowa was ranked 18th and IU was ranked 17th.
Michael Penix Jr. threw 3 interceptions in this game and looked horrendous. I thought IU was going to be the Buckeyes’ main competition in the Big Ten. Clearly, I was wrong about that. It will be interesting to see how they finish the rest of their season.
Michigan State took down Northwestern easily on Friday night 38-21 behind a strong performance from their running game. Kenneth Walker III had 23 carries for 264 yards and 4 touchdowns. It was a strong start to the season for the Spartans.
TTUN beat Western Michigan 47-14 in a game that wasn’t close nor interesting. Nebraska bounced back off their Week 0 loss to Illinois by destroying Fordham 52-7. Speaking of Illinois, they had perhaps the most disappointing performance of the weekend. They lost to UTSA 37-30 at home in an upset. That’s a truly horrendous loss for that program.
Purdue won at home against Oregon State 30-21. Maryland beat West Virginia in a solid 30-24 victory. Both of these programs needed to get season-opening wins. Same with Rutgers, who pounded Temple 61-14. Greg Schiano has his boys playing well early.
Two teams that could challenge the Ohio State football team for the Big Ten crown played in the most interesting game on Saturday at noon. Penn State upset Wisconsin in Madison in a 16-10 rock fight. Defense carried the day in that one and this win might signal that James Franklin has his team back on the right track after last season.
Ohio State plays another tough opponent next week when they face Oregon, but it’s always smart to keep an eye on what your competition is doing around the conference as well.
