Urban Meyer not wrong about vaccination statement
By Ryan Stano
Former Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer had some interesting comments when talking about making decisions on final cuts for the Jaguars. One of those comments had to do with how the vaccination status of a player was taken into account when making these tough decisions.
Meyer has had a rough start to his NFL coaching career. He’s had to deal with a lot of off-the-field nonsense. This is the latest incident to pop up. People are flying off the hook that he could cut a player just because they chose not to get the COVID vaccine.
First off, that is not what he is saying. Meyer is saying that was one of many factors. It’s a factor that the NFLPA is now investigating, but it wasn’t the only factor. Coaches have to factor in everything when they make a decision on cutting players to make the final roster.
Vaccination status is definitely a factor that needs to be considered. It’s like acknowledging someone’s age, health history, or salary cap number. All of these things come into consideration when you’re deciding whether or not to keep someone on the team.
Now if he would have said that he cut players specifically because they weren’t vaccinated, then that’s wrong. I understand why people would be angry at him. All he was saying is that it was one of many things that he and his coaching staff considered when making these roster choices.
I’m sure Meyer will be very happy when the regular season starts and he can just focus on the football aspect of the job. He’s definitely going to be dealing with more losses than he ever had at Ohio State. He might even lose more games this year than he did his entire time in Columbus.
Urban Meyer will be one of the former Buckeyes I’m going to be following very closely in the NFL.
