Ohio State Football’s most likely opponent in Big Ten Title
By Ryan Stano
If the Ohio State football team once again makes the Big Ten Championship, this is the most likely opponent for them to face in Lucas Oil Stadium.
Today is the first official day of college football. Nebraska and Illinois play today and one of them will be leading the Big Ten after the game. It will be the first time the Ohio State football team hasn’t been atop the conference in a long while. Of course, that shouldn’t last long.
The Buckeyes have won the last four Big Ten titles. They look talented enough to get their fifth this year as well. If they do make the Big Ten Championship Game again, who would their most likely opponent be? There are a couple of main contenders for that spot.
First off, neither of the teams playing today have any shot at that game. They are both very bad. It probably won’t be Northwestern either, even though they were there last weekend. They have lost too many good players to truly make a run in the West.
The two main contenders in my mind are Wisconsin and Iowa. Despite Bruce Feldman saying Ohio State isn’t much better than Iowa, he’s wrong. Even so, Iowa has a decent team. It seems like Kirk Ferentz puts together a run every five or six years and it seems like this is about that time.
But I believe the most likely opponent for the Buckeyes in that game would be Wisconsin. They were rolling to start last season before COVID derailed their season. It took out a lot of their best players and made them ineligible for the game anyway.
They have a good quarterback in Graham Mertz and always have a solid running game. They will likely be able to run through the West and take on the Buckeyes once again for a Big Ten title. The Badgers haven’t fared well against Ohio State though and have yet to beat them in that game.
We’re going to find out very soon just how good each team is. Things will be settled out on the field.
