Ohio State Football: How Thayer Munford can make himself a top-10 pick
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football player is one of four AP Preseason All-Americans on the team. Here’s how he can make himself a top-10 pick in next year’s NFL Draft.
A lot of people were surprised when Thayer Munford decided to come back and play for the Ohio State football program one more time. He was projected as high as a second-round pick in last season’s Draft and could have been drafted higher because it was a weak tackle class.
Even so, Munford decided to stay at Ohio State one more year. Now, he’s not even playing left tackle anymore. Munford has shifted over to guard to make room for Dawand Jones. But this positional move could make him more valuable in the eyes of NFL scouts.
If Munford can play well this season, he could push himself into the top ten of next year’s NFL Draft. He will have put out enough good tape at tackle and at guard to show he has the versatility to be a great offensive lineman at the next level. That’s especially true if he plays well early,
There’s a very good chance that Munford will have to help Jones often on Kayvon Thibodeaux in the Oregon game in the home opener. Thibodeaux might be the number one overall pick next season and Jones is a first-time starting tackle. It would be wise to give him some help.
Munford has the skills to be a franchise left tackle. Most teams see him as a tackle at the next level, but it’s never bad to show a team that you can do more. It also shows how unselfish Munford is after he told the coaching staff that Jones was too good not to start this year.
Protecting C.J. Stroud’s blindside won’t be easy. If Jones does struggle at tackle, Munford would be able to seamlessly slide back to tackle and shore things up. I’m excited to see what he can bring in the run game now that he can run more downhill as a guard.
A great season from Munford could make him a lot of money next year. He just has to keep doing what he’s been doing his entire career.
