Ohio State Football: How Ty Lockwood affects the 2023 recruiting class
By Ryan Stano
The Ohio State football team was able to pick up a commitment today from four-star tight end Ty Lockwood. How does that affect the rest of the 2023 class?
The Ohio State football team has lost some players in recent weeks, both on the team and in recruiting battles. It’s good to see the Buckeyes get a win today though as four-star tight end Ty Lockwood announced his commitment to the Ohio State program.
Lockwood hails from Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, and is the 8th-best tight end in the country. Lockwood stands at 6’5 and 225 pounds right now and still can grow more. He is a big kid that could be a big target for the Buckeyes down the line.
Lockwood had 23 offers from some big-time schools. He had offers from Penn State, TTUN, Texas A&M, South Carolina, and Auburn. He’s a kid that has a lot of potential and a lot of schools wanted to get their hands on him. Ultimately, he chose to come to Columbus.
Being so young, Lockwood has time to shoot up the recruiting rankings as well. He looks like a complete tight end. He can block well, can make tough catches, and is a matchup nightmare with his size. If he adds a little bit of muscle, this kid can be really good.
What does this mean for the rest of the 2023 class? Right now, he is the first commit for that class. It likely means that the Buckeyes won’t take another tight end, even though they just lost a recruit for the 2022 class from that position group. Lockwood seems locked in there.
It also means that other recruits are set to commit soon as well for that class. Once one domino falls, others seem to fall with it. That should be the case with this class as well. It will be interesting to see who the next domino is to commit to Ryan Day and his staff.
In any case, Lockwood is a good player with potential to be great. This is a good get for Day and the rest of the program.
