Ohio State Football: Depth in the secondary a concern
By Ryan Stano
With the Ohio State football team losing a player for the season, the depth in the secondary is now becoming a concern.
I hate injuries. They truly suck. No matter what team they happen for, I hate them all. I especially hate them when they happen for the Ohio State football team. That happened today when Jaylen Johnson tore his ACL and will now miss the entire 2021 season.
Because of that, the depth in the secondary takes a bit of a hit. The freshman wasn’t expected to play this season, but he still is someone who is talented that could have gotten some snaps in mop-up duty. It’s a shame that he ended up getting hurt at all.
Even without the injury to Johnson, the depth was a concern. Ohio State didn’t have very good play in the secondary last season. No one played up to snuff at any point. It was a huge problem all season. Ryan Day doesn’t have any players he can count on to play well back there.
It is yet to be determined if there will be any sort of shakeup to the secondary depth chart. Reports are that Demario McCall might actually get some time back there. If that truly is the case, then the secondary is not in a very good spot at the moment. They need players better than him to step up.
There isn’t much that Day and company can do at this point. They just have to hope that their guys improve and stay healthy. Cam Brown is already coming back from a torn Achilles that he suffered last season. The Buckeyes don’t really need any more injuries in the secondary.
Hopefully, Johnson can come back stronger than ever next season and compete for some playing time. We’ll just have to wait and see.
