For the first time since he took over as the head coach of the Ohio State football program, Ryan Day has to deal with a major test when it comes to handling his roster the right way.

The Ohio State football team now has four quarterbacks on the roster that were rated as a four-star prospect or higher coming out of high school. Two of those were five-star kids. That’s an insane amount of talent in one single room where only one of them can touch the ball.

Quinn Ewers joining this room makes Ryan Day’s job harder and easier at the same time. It makes it easier because he was able to secure the best recruit in Ohio State football history a year early and not let anyone flip him. That’s an accomplishment on its own.

It also made his job harder because of the intense amount of competition that he now has to sift through to find his next quarterback. Three really good players won’t get to play this season. That’s just the nature of being a quarterback in an uber-talented room.

This is the first real roster test that Day has had to face since taking over for Urban Meyer. This isn’t a position where he can rotate guys to make them all happy. One guy is going to be playing most of the season. That’s what makes this competition so interesting.

I still think it’s C.J. Stroud’s job to lose. He had the inside track to the job after a strong Spring and he has more experience in the offense than both Kyle McCord and Ewers. Ewers likely won’t be able to join the team for another 9 or 10 days anyway. He’s way behind the eight-ball.

No matter who comes out on top of this very critical positional race, it will give us some insight as to how Day handles intense competition like this in the future. We’ll see if he can pass the test.
