Ohio State Football: QB Quinn Ewers is perfect for NIL
By Coop Ledford
The NCAA’s recent changes in rules regarding players profiting off of name, image, and likeness, also known as NIL, will change the game forever. Star players will make fortunes during their college careers, especially with the Ohio State football program, and Quinn Ewers will be one of the most well-compensated.
The mullet. The perfect 1.000 rating. The name. The story. All of those things will make Quinn Ewers one of the most well-paid and recognizable players in college sports.
Ewers is already somewhat of a household name in Ohio and his home state of Texas. The five-star quarterback was previously committed to the Texas Longhorns, before flipping to the Ohio State football program. He is now foregoing his senior year of high school and heading to OSU early.
When you’re one of the highest-rated high school quarterbacks of all time, your name is going to be well-known, when you become a quarterback at one of college football’s blue-bloods, your fame is only going to grow.
Some Ohio State players have already capitalized off of NIL, as Chris Olave has worked with Raisin’ Canes Chicken, Tyreke Smith has promoted a Columbus Chevrolet dealership, and Luke Wypler made a nice chunk of cash selling a pretty funny hoodie on Twitter.
Soon, Ohio State players will be able to sign with a company called Brandr, which will allow their name, image, and likeness, to be shown on jerseys, tee shirts, cards, memorabilia, and much more. Jersey sales will be the biggest avenue of cash flow for players.
Think about how many generic #2 or #33 jerseys you see at any given Ohio State game. No names on the back of the jersey, just numbers. Starting this fall, fans will be able to purchase officially licensed Ohio State jerseys with player names on the back. Quinn Ewers’ #3 Ohio State jersey will surely be a top-seller, whether or not he wins the quarterback battle this season.
The possibilities of sponsorships are endless for a player like Quinn Ewers. Expect to see him on commercials for local stores, dealerships, or restaurants. Perhaps a hair product commercial?
When you consider potential sponsorships, commercials, jersey sales, and autograph signings, big-name Ohio State players will be very well-off college students. Quinn Ewers mentioned his decision to enroll at OSU early is not just a financial decision, but it will certainly be a huge plus.
