Former Ohio State Football player Tate Martell is heading to UNLV
By Ryan Stano
The former Ohio State football player is now transferring a third time. This seems like the final step in his college football journey.
Tate Martell is one of the most interesting former Ohio State football players in recent memory. For some reason, fans love to follow his very windy road in college football. Despite never playing significant snaps while he was in Columbus, his journey is fascinating.
Martell started as a four-star recruit in the class of 2018. He was recruited by Urban Meyer and was expected to play a big role with the Buckeyes once Dwayne Haskins left. In that season where Haskins started, Martell did get some snaps in goal-line packages.
Martell wasn’t able to significantly help the Buckeyes in any way that season. In fact, those goal-line packages seemed to inhibit Ohio State’s ability to score. Meyer seemed to put him in there for fear of losing him to the transfer portal.
Despite that, that’s exactly where he ended up. Martell transferred to Miami after Justin Fields transferred in. Martell wasn’t able to win the starting job there and left the team last season. Now, he’s about to be off to his third college football program in his career.
Martell will now be a part of UNLV. He’s from the Las Vegas area so now he is close to home. It will likely be his last shot to play major college football and actually have any sort of career. Heck, he hasn’t played any snaps since 2019 when he appeared in three games for Miami.
Even though I thought this was something that was likely a few months ago. I seriously doubt that Martell succeeds in Vegas. He doesn’t seem to have the work ethic necessary to truly be a good college football player. He thinks he’s a star and he’s barely average. I don’t wish him any will ill though. I hope he can improve and mature.
This will certainly be the last chapter in his journey. It will be interesting to see where it takes him.
