Ohio State football: Chances Olave or Wilson win Maxwell Award
By Ryan Stano
Both Ohio State football players were named to the Preseason Maxwell Award Watchlist. Here are the chances of either receiver winning the award.
Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson aren’t just two of the best players on the Ohio State football team, but two of the best players in the country. That’s why both receivers were named to the Preseason Maxwell Award Watchlist. This award is given to the best player in college football.
Both receivers are getting some well-deserved recognition. Based on their ability to catch the ball and make things happen after the catch, both are vital parts of the offense. Because both of them are so good at what they do, their chances of either of them winning the award are slim.
I say that because they will cannibalize each other’s stats. No matter who the quarterback is, and his play will play a part in this as well, they won’t get enough stats to seriously contend for the award. This award is mainly given to either running backs or quarterbacks.
With that being said, Olave and Wilson are good enough to buck that trend. They are the best two receivers in the country playing in an offense that can utilize them both to their full ceilings. They also play against good enough competition to get recognition for their efforts.
When it’s all said and done, their chances to win come down to the quarterback’s ability to get these guys the ball. If he’s able to do that, then Olave and Wilson have an outside shot at the award. Of course, if either receiver has the stats to be recognized for it, so would whatever quarterback starts for the Buckeyes.
It’s extremely unlikely that either player wins this award, but it’s still nice to be recognized as one of the nation’s best players. I’d expect big seasons from both of them before they leave for the NFL next year.
